Gwen Stefani Music Review

By: Ashley Malmberg

Baby don’t baby don’t baby don’t lie. Catchy isn’t it? I think so. Gwen Stefani’s new song “Baby Don’t Lie” has caught the attention of many pop fans including myself. The song written by Gwen Stefani, Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco, and Noel Zancanella describes relationship uncertainties, the absence of honesty in a relationship and the want for a stronger love. It has been nearly six years since Gwen has released any individual records so “Baby Don’t Lie” marks her comeback as a solo artist.

Gwen Stefani’s spunky music has been popular for decades, her most prominent music being “Don’t Speak” (1996), “Hollaback Girl” (2004), and “The Sweet Escape” (2006). Stefani made a name for herself back in the 1990s when she became the lead vocalist of the band No Doubt. After many years with the band she decided to pursue a solo career and launched her own clothing line, L.A.M.B.. In 2012, she rejoined the band and together they began working on their new album, Push and Shove.

Ever since “Baby Don’t Lie” became public on October 18, 2014, it has received mixed reviews. When asked about the song, Bill Lamb of said it “is as catchy as the sung chorus,” and Gwen Stefani has an “authoritative voice.” He stated that the lyrics “Detail the experience of hearing words from a lover that don’t match what you see in their eyes.” Bradley Stern of MuuMuse felt that Gwen’s new song was “dangerously catchy, and an obvious radio smash upon first listen.”

When I heard “Baby Don’t Lie” on the radio for the first time, I really enjoyed it. The lyrics are very catchy and it has a really cool vibe. Gwen introduced a new style; something with a more of a reggae feel, unlike her past bubbly pop songs. The themes of her lyrics are similar to her past music though, pertaining to relationships and love. I agree with Angela Rojos (Stefani fan) when she said “Although it is different from her other music, you can still tell that it is her by her signature vocals.” Gwen’s voice is so distinctive in all of her work and I think that her singing is what makes her music so unique and well-regarded. Billboard Adult Pop placed “Baby Don’t Lie” at number 35 while Billboard Pop Songs listed it at number 29. “Baby Don’t Lie” is just a sneak peek into Gwen’s new solo album, so it will be interesting to see how fans react to the album as a whole.
